Adult Literacy Program

Members of the YVC community come from across Africa and speak many languages. Often English is not one of them. To address language barriers for refugees in Nairobi, YVC teaches foundational and intermediary English and Kiswahili. With these languages, refugees can better integrate into host communities. This includes having better access to essential services, job opportunities, and legal representation.

Our main goals

  • Improve basic literacy and numeracy skills among adults who missed formal education.

  • Empower individuals to read, write, and perform everyday tasks confidently (e.g., reading signs, filling forms, handling money).

  • Promote lifelong learning and open pathways to further education or vocational training.

  • Enhance self-esteem and independence by enabling adults to actively participate in family, community, and civic life.

  • Support economic empowerment by helping participants gain skills needed for employment or small business management.

  • Bridge the digital divide by integrating basic digital literacy (e.g., using phones, sending messages, searching online).

  • Foster social inclusion by reducing stigma and isolation linked
